Breaking The Mold

Jun 21, 2024 | Tech, Uncategorized

My interest in technology stemmed from a desire to understand the systems shaping our world. A college mentorship program connected me with professional who recognized my curiosity and gave me things to go chase down. Their guidance opened the door, but the journey within required self-belief and a willingness to learn from different perspectives.

Seeing the Bigger Picture: A Different Lens on Security

My background has instilled in me a strong sense of community and a keen eye for inclusivity. This translates into my approach to security. I focus not just on technical vulnerabilities, but also on the human element.

  • Social Engineering: There’s a stereotype that security engineers enjoy tinkering with systems, building them up or tearing them down (often working independently). However, my experience has shown the immense value of social interaction in security. Collaboration has led to solutions for problems I initially thought only a technical fix could address.
  • Where Does it Stop?: I’ve always been fascinated by how things work. But the deeper I dive, the more I crave understanding the “why” behind the “what.” This insatiable curiosity makes static fields a no-go. I’ve been drawn to an ever-evolving world empowered by technology, where constant learning is a must. Testing my limits and expanding my skillset fuels me, allowing me to grow alongside technology’s rapid advancements.

Building Bridges: Advocating for Diversity

The tech industry, and by extension cloud security, benefits from a diversity of thought and experience. Yet, minorities are often underrepresented.

  • Mentorship and Outreach: Let’s face it. Representation matters. Seeing someone who looks like you succeed is incredibly powerful. That’s why I don’t hesitate to share my experiences. However, learning is a two-way street. My own career has been enriched by mentors from various backgrounds who generously shared their knowledge. In fact, teaching someone new to the field is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your own learning.
  • Building Inclusive: When it comes to diversity in the workplace, the conversation often focuses on cultural backgrounds. While that’s crucial, I believe we need a more holistic approach. True diversity encompasses not just who we are, but how we work. Some people thrive in late-night brainstorming sessions, while others excel at crafting detailed emails. The best leaders I’ve encountered understand these individual strengths and leverage them to optimize team performance. This broader definition of diversity, beyond just culture, is what truly empowers us to build solutions that can tackle any evolving challenge.

The Journey Continues: Lessons Learned

I’ve learned several valuable lessons in tech and business:

  • Own Your Voice: Your unique perspective is an asset. Speak up, share your ideas, and contribute to the conversation.
  • Embrace Continuous Learning: The landscape is dynamic. Stay curious, learn from others, and never stop expanding your knowledge.
  • Build Your Community: Find mentors and colleagues who support your journey. Give back by helping others on their own paths.
